Some images appeal simply because they are beautiful and others because they have meaning or a message.
Candid images afford clear messages about life, circumstance, and environment. Portraiture in black and white, posed or informal, I regard passionately.
From cathedrals to skyscrapers, doorways, windows, and stairwells, my camera is naturally drawn to the beauty and art displayed in the lines, colors, or repetitive design. A fascination with architecture is easily observed in my photography, from early images to current portfolio work.
Inspiration came from talent within the family (including poetry, piano, quilting, vocals, and painting), to the very famous masters. Classical music at the symphony and field trips to art museums were early influences, as well. Working in various mediums enhanced my creativity and fueled an incessant yearning to attain a place in the art world.
A Kodak Polaroid was among my favorite gifts as a child. I loved the black and white images and instant gratification the camera lent. My passion for photography was apparent by age 25. I was most comfortable behind the lens, with an eerie familiarity I had, perhaps, done this in another time. Toting two cameras and lugging a cumbersome equipment bag soon became signature. Everyone and everything was a potential subject, although my preference was to photograph people. There isn't a particular genre of photography with which I completely identify. A wide range of subject matter is appealing, and I use the techniques and materials that seem to fit. I try to stay away from labels, especially when applied to creative efforts, and prefer to think "outside the box."
In a face, with a gesture, on a city street, in landscapes, with movement, and light...there is art, and a photograph.
With quiet determination, I allow my camera to tell a story. By applying different angles, various lenses and focal lengths, I bring the subject close to capture essence or a mood. Without time constraints, I remain focused until the message is recorded.
Photography, unlike any other medium gives me a sense of creative freedom. Whether it's preparing for a shoot or hopping in the car heading to "the middle of nowhere", I cannot imagine a better profession. Much of my work is spontaneous. I look for an interesting place and allow the camera to lead me to a subject. Some images are purely experimental. Many great photographs have resulted from experimentation and "operator error."
Artistic growth is constant. Enrolling in a few courses over the years has provided "the basics." I realize the best education comes from applying what is inherent, in taking risks, being inquisitive and unafraid, and staying committed to creative goals.
